The transition from military life to civilian life can be difficult. Gulf Coast State College honors it is veterans in various way. The college is recognized as a top quality, military friendly school as a member of Servicemembers Opportunity College (SOG). Gulfcoast.edu states that the college was the Best for Vets, 2020 Military Friendly School. Gulf Coast State College has a large veteran population and are committed to honoring the preference given by Florida law. The Florida Preference law gives preferences in employment, promotions after being deployed and retention.

The individuals that qualify for this preference includes; disable veterans who has served active duty in any branch of the U. S. Armed Forces. It also includes the spouse of a person who had a total disability, permanent in nature, resulting from a service-connected disability. The preference also includes wartime veterans unmarried widow or widower of a veteran who died of a service-connected disability, mothers, father, legal guardians, veterans as defined in 1.01(14), F.S. and a current member of any reserve component of the U.S. Armed forces or Florida National Guard. In order to get the preference a veteran mush have been honorably discharged.
