At Gulf Coast State College, students come from all kinds of backgrounds and experiences, each with their own reasons for being there. For Tyler Martin, his journey wasn’t necessarily something he carefully planned at first, but it’s become something that’s helping shape his future in ways he didn’t expect.
Tyler explained that his decision to attend Gulf Coast wasn’t entirely his own. Instead, it came down to location and practicality. “I didn’t choose the school personally, but I believe it’s because it’s the closest college in Panama City Beach,” he said. Still, he recognizes that the school has a strong reputation in the area, adding that it’s “the most recommended college out of everywhere else.” Even though it may not have started as his top choice, his experience there has been positive overall.
When describing the campus, Tyler emphasized how comfortable it feels. He said the environment is “friendly and comforting,” which makes it easier for students to adjust and feel at home. Beyond that, he also appreciates the physical design of the school. “I think what I like most about the college is its architecture and interior for each building,” he shared, showing that even the atmosphere and appearance of the campus play a role in his experience.
Academically, Tyler has found the most enjoyment in courses related to digital media. He explained that “anything that’s digital related” stands out to him, especially since he already had some self-taught experience before coming to college. His classes have helped build on that foundation and strengthen his skills. Even though he is still figuring out his exact career path, he believes the college is helping him move in the right direction. “I would be lying if I didn’t say that it is helping me so far,” he said. He added that the program is helping him develop skills that feel “professional enough to help out with some jobs in the digital media field.”
Tyler’s interest in digital media didn’t just come from school,
it started with his personal hobbies. “What got me interested in digital media in the first place is
because of my ongoing experience of making social media content and editing photos and videos,” he explained. For him, it’s not just something he studies, but something he genuinely enjoys doing in his free time.
Throughout his classes, Tyler has worked on a variety of creative projects. These include video production assignments, writing articles for Commodore Waves, and even creating “fun, fake promotional advertisements.” These kinds of projects have allowed him to explore different sides of digital media while also building practical skills. Although he mentioned that he can’t recall every specific technique he’s learned, he still emphasized that he’s picked up “a lot of tips and tricks” related to photo and video editing.
When it comes to the future, Tyler keeps an open mind. He admitted that he isn’t completely sure where life will take him after finishing his degree. “Who knows where my life will take me after my current degree ends?” he said. Despite the uncertainty, he remains hopeful and ready for whatever comes next, adding, “Hopefully I’ll be ready enough to take them on.”
On a more personal level, Tyler describes himself as “funny, creative, and imaginative,” which clearly connects to his interest in digital media and content creation. His personality reflects someone who enjoys expressing ideas and thinking outside the box.
Outside of school, Tyler likes to spend his time doing things that match his creative personality and interests. He goes into more detail in the audio recording below, but it’s clear that what he does outside of class really connects to who he is and what he enjoys.
For students who may be considering attending Gulf Coast State College, Tyler offers some encouraging advice. He understands that starting college can feel overwhelming, but he reassures others that they’re not alone. “Hey, I know this may be scary to you, and trust me, I was on the same boat as you,” he said. He encourages new students to push through challenges and stay motivated, reminding them that college is an opportunity to grow. “As long as you give it your best… you can accomplish anything that you might not know you could yet.”
Through his experiences, Tyler Martin represents a student who is still figuring things out, but is actively learning, growing, and building skills along the way. His story shows that even if your path isn’t perfectly planned from the start, it can still lead to meaningful opportunities and personal development.
