Go to Events

Events are a great and convenient way to meet new people. Events and activities are held on campus almost every week. They are free to GCSC and FSU students, and FSU holds events on their campus as well. You can meet new people at one of the smaller events like movie night or join in on the fun at a large event like the Masquerade Ball. For example, Fall Fest was held last semester, and the entire community was invited to participate. Various clubs and organizations showed up to help with the event, and participants got to meet new people and form relationships. Do you take classes online? GCSC also hosts online events for those who cannot come to campus.

Join a Club

GCSC and FSU offer a variety of clubs where you can pursue your interest with your peers. Are you into sports? Join intramurals to participate in doge ball and Ultimate frisbee. Are you more of an art lover? Visionaries Ink helps create art for the school, community, and art exhibits. Students and clubs often meet in the student lounge located in the lunchroom to play video games, pool, and ping-pong. Clubs also participate in many of the events held around campus. Feel free to visit their table during events or reach out to the advisors to find out how to join.

Form a study group

Are you having trouble in class? Well, odds are you’re, not the only one. Reach out to some of your classmates and form a study group. Not only will you get your work done, but you can make friends along the way. I’ve been a part of a handful of study groups, and it’s an easy way to get to know your classmates. You may likely be assigned a group project, and luckily for you, you’ll already have a group to rely on. It’s also an effective way to practice socializing if you are not comfortable with one on one interactions.

Volunteer with SGA

SGA is a great way to get involved in school and meet a variety of people. You can volunteer to help out events or get sworn in to become a member of SGA. The SGA room is open to all students, whether you want to hang out or do your homework. Most of the events on campus are hosted by SGA. They work closely with all the clubs on campus, so you’re sure to meet many different people. I joined SGA last year, and many of the friends I have now I met during my time at meetings and events.

Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

I know from experience that one of the best ways to make new friends is to get out of your comfort zone and try something new. It may be scary at first, but it feels rewarding to challenge yourself. And, it doesn’t have to be a major step. Maybe you’re more of a homebody, challenge yourself to go out on the town and talk to one new person. Next time, challenge yourself to talk to two. It may not seem like much, but steps like this help you build up confidence.
