Press Release from Liz Kasey

Gulf Coast State College Women’s Cross Country Head Coach Tom Dever proudly announces Hannah DaCosta as the first Women’s Cross Country scholarship recipient.  DaCosta hails from Port St. Joe, FL, and is in her senior year at Port St. Joe High School.  DaCosta found her love for running uniquely.  In elementary school, she participated in the Morning Mile program, where laps were recorded, and prizes were awarded.

It was through this program that she discovered her affinity for running, leading her to join the Cross Country Program at Port St. Joe Junior Senior High School while she was in middle school. She credits the Port St. Joe High School Cross Country Head Coach Keion McNair, who has been her coach from the sixth grade, as playing a pivotal role in shaping her into the exceptional athlete she is today.  She has not only demonstrated exceptional athletic prowess, but has also exhibited resilience, determination, and a passion for running that sets her apart.  Currently, DaCosta’s personal record in the 5K is 22.50, 800m 2:38:02, and her 1600m is 6:28:66.

DaCosta’s decision to attend Gulf Coast State College was motivated not only by its proximity to Port St. Joe, FL, but also by the institution’s esteemed nursing program, one of the best in Florida.

“Hannah’s journey and commitment to the sport exemplify the qualities we seek in our athletes.  We are thrilled to have her as a trailblazer for our Women’s Cross Country Program, and we look forward to seeing her excel both on and off the track.” -Head Coach Tom Dever.

The Women’s Cross Country inaugural season will being during the Fall of 2024.

Congratulations to Hannah!  We look forward to watching you succeed as a Gulf Coast State College Student-Athlete!
