SHAPING THE IDENTITY OF DOWNTOWN PANAMA CITY

Panama City’s downtown area is currently going through changes and improvements. Small businesses from retail to restaurants all have a hand in shaping what downtown Panama City is. Not only do they affect the aesthetics of downtown but they help with traffic and what downtown Panama City feels like. With new stores coming in and others growing, what defines downtown Panama City is what local businesses decide.

Locally Owned Businesses. One thing that stands out when walking around downtown Panama City you will find multiple locally owned boutiques and specialty shops. Panama City’s locally owned businesses range from retailers to service-based companies with products that help define our coastal personality. Stores such as Jute and Palm and Sage offer carefully curated clothing, home décor and gifts that are sure to please locals and visitors alike. Panama City businesses pride themselves on offering unique locally inspired goods that chain retailers typically don’t carry. Creating a unique product selection and offering fabulous customer service are just a couple of things these local shops do to help shoppers enjoy a Panama City feel as opposed to anywhere USA.

Businesses are another contributing factor that defines downtown. History Class Brewing Company and Trigo Deli are businesses that bring people downtown daily. Downtown businesses also act as a place for community members to meet and gather. Eating outside, local festivals and accessible streets to walk are ways to increase community members being downtown. Restaurants give community members a place to eat and socialize with others. College kids and young adults have locations to study or grab food with friends outside of campus.

Local businesses are important to the economy of Panama City for many reasons. They help create jobs and keep money flowing within the community. Small businesses also tend to have many long-term benefits. Many small businesses have locally grown and give money to other local vendors. By buying and selling locally, we can help Panama City flourish for years to come. Another benefit of frequenting local businesses is that they help foster a community in Panama City. Building relationships with your local grocer, attending local events, and buying from multiple local businesses can help you establish relationships with people that you may not have met just by shopping at large chain businesses. Administration says that locally owned small businesses comprise a large percentage of commercial activity within communities nationwide.

“Downtown Panama City appears to be slowly transforming since Hurricane Michael.” Businesses within downtown Panama City have had substantial impact on the revitalization following Hurricane Michael. Since the hurricane’s passing, there has been a consistent flow of businesses coming into the area. Whether it be new businesses opening up or established businesses remodeling or expanding, Downtown Panama City is seeing growth.

College students don’t need to venture downtown just for shops and restaurants. Panama City natives frequent downtown to keep small businesses alive and take part in the culture of our city. Local businesses also give students looking for a job or networking opportunity within the fields of business, marketing, and media.

Business owners in downtown Panama City are still thriving. Whether they’re contributing to Panama City’s business aspect through their storefronts or services, or through philanthropy and volunteering, these local businesses continue to mold Panama City down to its core. Downtown Panama City is expanding, but its business owners will always be at its heart.

I enjoy creating content that highlights real places, people, and experiences, especially along the Gulf Coast. Outside of school, I spend most of my time with my family exploring local areas like downtown Panama City and 30A, or working on photo and video projects such as weddings, real estate, and landscape photography.  I’m married and have two young children, along with two dogs, a German Shepherd and a Corgi, which keep life busy and fun. I’m excited to continue building my creative and technical skills as I move forward in my educational journey.
