If you are looking for something to do in Panama City, this is one of the best free date nights available to the public. The annual Piano Festival at Gulf Coast State College is a three-day event that is open to the public at no cost, making it a cultural and educational experience for all.

The Piano Festival Structure

The Piano Festival is structured to highlight student achievement, professional artistry, and music education.

Day 1 – Student Recital: This opening day features student performers showcasing music pieces they have prepared over several weeks. The recital provides students with the opportunity to perform in front of an audience, helping them build confidence and gain real-world performance experience. Preparation for this event typically takes about six weeks, allowing students time to refine technique and stage presence.

Some of the work performed at the Festival:

  • Abschied, S. 251 – Franz Liszt
  • Mazurka in Bb minor, Op. 24, No. 4 – Frederic Chopin
  • “Katy-dids” from Summer Dreams, Op. 47, No. 4 – Amy Beach
  • Piano Sonata No. 14 in C Minor, K. 457 – W.A. Mozart
  • Sonatina in C Major, Op. 36, No. 1 – Muzio Clementi
  • Sonata for Four Hands in C Major, Op. 14, No. 1 – Muzio Clementi
  • Sarabande – William Gillock
  • Suspect – Hololive Idol Project

Day 2 – Visiting Artist and Faculty Performance: The second day features a visiting artist Dr. Jeremiah Padilla, performance alongside GCSC faculty member Dr. Steven DiBlasi. This concert allows students and community members to hear professional piano performances in an intimate academic setting.

Some of the works played:

  • Meditation, Op. 72 No. 5 – P. Tchaikovsky
  • Valse from Sleeping Beauty – P. Tchaikovsky Arr. by S. Rachmaninoff
  • Three Preludes

Piano Sonata No. 14 C Minor, K. 457 II. Molto allegro

Day 3 – Student Piano Workshop: The final day includes a student piano workshop open to all piano students, not only those enrolled at GCSC, with registration required to participate. The workshop is also open for the public to attend as observers. During the workshop, registered students perform pieces for instructors, who provide feedback, technical corrections, and musical education. This workshop allows observers to learn more in-depth about piano technique and musical interpretation; gain a strong understanding of the process behind refining a musical performance, hand positions, and more.

How it all started

The Piano Festival originated from a single piano concert performed by Dr. DiBlossi in 2025. Following the event’s success and strong community interest, the program expanded into a three-day Piano Festival beginning in 2026. The festival now serves as both a performance platform and an educational outreach, creating strong connections between the college, the local arts community, and the public.

As the interest continues to grow along with event attendance, The Piano Festival is expected to expand even further next year. Potentially including more guest artists and masterclasses. This success highlights the love of the community for live performances and music.

Make sure to be on the lookout for the event next year by visiting the GCSC Visual and Performing Arts “Event” Page.
