Donald Martin’s Linoleum Block Prints ‘Tangle #1, #2, & #3’

Have you visited the Amelia Center Gallery at Gulf Coast State College recently? If not, you are in for a real treat!

On February 3rd the Amelia Center located in Room 112 welcomed its newest exhibition, Second Nature. A show like never before! Unlike most shows that this gallery has seen, this artist uses a special and technical medium for his art. The artist uses a process called linoleum block printmaking to make his wonderful pieces of art. Who is the artist?

The Man Behind the Art: Donald Martin

Residing in St. Augustine, Florida, Donald Martin is a professor at Flagler College. Inspired by eighteenth and nineteenth century scenes of plant and animal life, began block printmaking to imitate scenes similar to those. The work in which he produces can be recognizable to those around campus, of local Florida. As said by the artist himself on his home website, “I have been inspired for years by the clarity and integrity of botanical and biological illustrations of the 18th and 19th century but in my recent work I have evolved away from the idealism and isolation of these illustrations”, which can be seen in his more abstract work of the complex scenes of nature and balancing dark and lights. Although Martin is mostly known for his relief printmaking he dabbles in almost all of the arts; painting, drawing, and sculpturing. The artists’ work is also seen in many places around local Florida such as the Jacksonville International Airport. As one can see it’s a real treat to have Martin’s wonderful work on the campus!

Featured Work:

All the pieces at the gallery are of Martin’s linoleum block prints collection, but there are differing versions of the prints featured in the show! Showing the diversity in the artists’ work.
