What do you need to know before going back to the gym?

When Covid 19 hit Spring of last year, it shut the entire campus down. The shutdown included in-person classes and the fitness center. Students and staff had to use remote learning using programs such as Zoom to help sustain their academic processes. Everyone also had to depend on home fitness or outdoor activities to maintain physical wellness. This was difficult for many because going to the gym and exercising with others was motivating, while doing it at home alone was not so much.

I need to get back into the gym myself, so I decided to visit the health and wellness center to see what I could learn about any current guidelines and precautions. When I arrived, I was promptly referred to Mike Kandler, Athletic Director, to answer my questions. He first explained that there were no mask requirements; if you prefer to wear a mask, then feel free to wear it. Next, he told me that physical distancing is still essential and that you must respect others’ space while engaging in activities. Finally, he explained the importance of cleanliness. After finishing with the workout equipment, it’s important to wipe it down with the provided sanitizing wipes. I asked Mr. Kandler if he had any additional thoughts or comments about the reopening, and he said he was happy to see it reopened because we need to keep our bodies strong to have the ability to help fight off any sickness that may come our way.
