Local College Radio Stations

When you think about your local college radio station, it is not something new. The start of college radio, at least when we talk about the FM stations, can be traced back to the 1960s. College radio stations became popular when the Federal Communications Commission issued out class D licenses for ten-watt radio stations. Additionally, college stations were broadcasting for decades on the AM band.

Unfortunately, college radio couldn’t always play your top 40 hits due to the size of the station. But fortunately, college radio is also the reason why new emerging artists and trends first began.

Some new genres in the past included; punk, new wave, alternative, rock, indie rock, and hip hop. Because of college radio, these genres are now a part of the mainstream music that is heard on commercial radio today.

College Radio For the Community

Also, college radio stations have specific programs and schedules that are more relaxed compared to commercial radio.  When it comes to college radio, the ideas are endless. Students can have shows about campus or local news, sports on campus, or talk shows with 1-3 students. College radio is a freeform format, and depending on the student, their shows have the potential for amazing creativity. Ideally, this is what makes joining a college radio station so fun!

Local college radio stations are a vital component of campus life. As a student, you can trust that your college station has all the updates for on-campus life, local news, and people you trust. Apart from the Alter Nation, there are college radio stations in the state of Florida that serve the student body.

There is WFCF from St. Augustine, WANM in Tallahassee, Florida, and WVFS in Tallahassee, Florida.
