After the wonderful reception for Godspell this November (tickets still available Nov. 8th – Nov. 10th), there will be a new exhibit coming to the Amelia Art Center on Nov. 15th. It’s the Twelfth Annual Cup Show Form and Function. I’m not normally one to understand high art, but cups are something I can get behind.

A Cup for Every Occasion

From what I have been able to understand, the Annual Cup Show is centered around artwork presented through cups as a medium. This is certainly fascinating, especially since I’ve never been to a cup show myself. There is no doubt that cups are capable of conveying art of all shapes and sizes. When have we not gone out and seen a collection of cups, glasses, and mugs with designs that tickle our imagination in just the right way?

It’s not just about copyrighted characters and logos. There are quotes, messages, photographs and unique artwork that can all be conveyed through a drinking vessel. I can’t begin to imagine is what happens when you leave a cup in the hands of an artist. Which theme will they pursue? What message will they try to send? What unique design will they imprint on the cup for all to see?

It sounds fantastic, laughable even, but there is such an important message to be had here and I’m sure that it has been at the forefront of this event every year for the last twelve years. Art is everywhere and it can be imprinted on anything – including a cup. I hope that this upcoming event will be inspiration for everybody attending. Maybe next year, I’ll be able to submit my own cup to the show. I look forward to seeing what’s there.

This year’s Twelfth Annual Cup Show Form and Function will open without delay on November 15, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Following in the steps of Adam Field, the judge for the 11th Annual Cup Show, will be Peter Pincus.
