Caleb Erskine originally wanted to get into game design, but after taking several courses he decided that the amount of math involved with game design was not for him.

After coming to this realization he switched his focus to the digital media program because he had previous experience with it from classes he took at Mosley high school during his junior year. The specialization within the digital media program he chose was the production specialization because he had become interested in video during his time at Mosley high school.

While attending Gulf coast he was offered a part-time position with video production. He did this for around three years even after he graduated with a bachelor’s in digital media in 2017. He then got a full-time job at news channel 7 where he worked for a little over a year until a full-time position at Gulf Coast opened up.

I asked him what it is he does now and he said

“My official title is Video Production assistant, which means I help out with video editing, recording video, going out in the field and filming B-roll which is just extra footage that we can use to add on top of video if we need too. I also help out with live events like live sporting events, graduations, and anything else they want live broadcasted. I am also sort of in charge of the tv studio”

I asked him what made him want to work at gulf coast rather than somewhere else

“ In Panama City in general there aren’t a lot of video jobs unless you go work for marketing or work for any kind of news station. Everything is kind of outside of Panama City so there is not a huge market here, but like I said there is a tiny one here if you can get your foot in the door. But yeah, I saw this as an opportunity to kind of practice my video craft and I was already familiar with everything here.”

Caleb says his favorite part of this job is editing video, but the most frustrating part of his job is

“when people don’t want to coordinate with you the way that they really should. An example is the college sent a couple students to record interviews and we scheduled two days, but no one showed up. So basically, when people schedule something, but then they cancel it, and then they want to move it, but they decide to tell you tell you the day before.”

During his free time, he enjoys spending time with his fiancé, playing video games, sleeping, and star wars. He says he is excited about The Rise of Skywalker. He is getting married soon and looks forward to spending more time with his wife.
