Early mornings and late nights are just part of the routine for college athletes, but for Ella Grace Kelley, it’s something she’s learned to embrace. As a softball player at Gulf Coast State College, her days are packed, but she wouldn’t trade it for anything. “I chose softball from a very young age. It was something I fell in love with,” she said. “I’ve always had a dream of playing at the college level.

That dream eventually led her to Gulf Coast, where she says the decision felt right for more than just athletics. “I chose Gulf Coast due to the family-like atmosphere, the location, and the softball program,” she said. Being part of a team that feels close-knit made the transition to college a lot easier. Her daily schedule is nonstop. Between classes, workouts, and practice, there’s barely any time to slow down. “A typical day for me includes going to class, working out, going to practice, and spending time with my teammates,” she said. While it sounds structured, the reality can be exhausting. “The hardest part is the balance,” Ella said. “I spend countless hours staying up studying just to leave at 6 a.m. the next day for a game.” Managing both academics and athletics has definitely been an adjustment, especially with the early mornings and long days. Even with the challenges, she stays focused on her bigger goal. “I balance them by remembering what and why I’m doing this,” she said. “I am lucky enough to live out the dream of being a college softball player, so some sleepless nights and early mornings are worth it.” A big part of what keeps her going is her family. “My family motivates me to keep going. They have always been a constant for me in everything I do, they are my why,” she said. That support system plays a huge role in helping her push through tough days. While softball is a major part of her life right now, Ella is also thinking about her future beyond the field. “My goal for the future is to become a doctor and help people when they are struggling most,” she said. Balancing such a demanding sport while preparing for a career in medicine shows how dedicated she is. Looking back, some of her favorite memories come from her high school career. “My favorite memory from softball is winning back-to-back state championships with my high school team,” she said. Moments like those helped shape her love for the game and pushed her to continue playing at the next level. For Ella, being a student-athlete isn’t just about softball. It’s about staying disciplined, managing her time, and continuing to work toward both her athletic and academic goals, even when it’s not easy.
