The first week of the fall semester started on a high note as The AlterNation, Gulf Coast State College’s student-run radio station, provided music and energy for SGA’s welcome events. From playing crowd favorites to interacting with students, our DJs helped set the tone for a semester full of new opportunities.

What stood out most wasn’t just the music, but the response. Students stopped by to share how The AlterNation made their campus experience feel more connected, and parents even mentioned that they listen to the station with their kids, calling it their favorite station. That kind of feedback means a lot, especially at a time when both college radio and public radio have been under scrutiny.

Our main station, WKGC FM 90.7, has faced challenges after the loss of CPB funding, and those impacts have been felt by The AlterNation as well. Even so, both stations have continued to adapt and persevere. The encouragement from the student body shows that we’re not only staying strong, we’re moving forward together.

Looking ahead, we’re excited for the opportunities this semester will bring. Dozens of students expressed interest in joining The AlterNation as DJs, showing that radio is not dead; it’s very much alive, thriving, and something our students truly want and need.
