Last year, in September of 2021 Nintendo broke the internet with their announcement of the Super Mario Bros Movie. The actual announcement of the movie being released soon wasn’t what caused such a reaction. After all, the movie had been first announced all the way back in 2018. It was the bizarre, almost parody like casting of the beloved characters.

With the main character, the titular Mario, being voiced by Chris Pratt the world was in uproar.

The other castings didn’t help the confusion and amusement most people felt at the news. With Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong, Charlie Day as Luigi and Keegan Key as Toad most people were simply shocked. Even more so that the actual Mario voice actor, Charles Martinet had an unknown role in the movie.

The casting was so commonly mocked that Chris Pratt himself came forward in an interview with Variety speak about how seriously he was taking the role, and how he was attempting to live up to the legendary voice of Charles Martinet.

Which Studio is making the Mario movie?

The movie is being made by Illumination Studios. Which are responsible for movies such as; Minions, Sing, The Lorax, and Despicable Me. This studio choice has also been a point of contention. Many people feel the “cheap cash grab” like nature of many Illumination movies is already a sign that the movie will be awful.

Despite the reaction of Mario fans everywhere we now have an official date for the first trailer of the movie. Which will be on October 6th 3:05 CST, which is this upcoming Thursday. The announcement itself helped calm a lot of the fear fans had, though many people still heavily doubt the movies success. Points in its favor however, It almost looks like a modern day Mario game, with some minor adjustments to make the titular character more detailed and heroic. With the movie having a very true to form style with many hidden details for fans to find in just the promotional image.

One of the striking parts of the image is the castle, which anyone familiar with Mario will recognize, Peaches’ Castle. With other details being both obvious and hard to see, such as toad carrying a backpack similar to captain toad. A Donkey Kong barrel in the background for a store, blink blocks, and Mario galaxy like floating landmasses.

While many fans are still debating on if the movie will be any good, Nintendo seems confident. The movie already has its release date set, being slated to hit theaters on April 7th 2023.
