Trevor Whatley does anything a normal college guy may do. He goes to school, has a job, and enjoys video games in his free time. While from the outside he may have a very ordinary life, he has a passion for one thing that cannot be taken away.
Trevor is the youngest of 5 children, all of which have musical talent. “My dad has been in a band for as long as I can remember,” Trevor says, “he travels all over the south nearly every weekend.” His brother has even written, played, and produced two albums that he put together all on his own. His other siblings have passions in guitar, bass, and vocals.
With so much musical talent in the family, Trevor was bound to one day develop the passion that he maintains now, with drums.
“I play almost every day, I have a drum kit in the middle of my kitchen” Trevor says laughing, “It’s the only place it could really fit, my wife isn’t too much of a fan of the placement, but it works!”
Trevor says that he plays with his dad and family any chance he gets, he is constantly looking for the next musical outlet he can plug his drumming passion into. While he hates to admit it, Trevor says that his passion is one of the things that he is best at.
“I love playing 80s rock: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and any hard metal that has epic drum solos.”
While Trevor does not have any plans of pursuing music in his future careers, he says that that doesn’t stop him from enjoying his hobby in his free time.
Many people think that if you devote so much time to a subject, you should want to pursue it, move towards it as fast as you can to achieve the best you can be at that subject. However, Trevor wants others to know that that doesn’t necessarily have to be the case.
“Yeah, I mean, I think it is great to have a hobby and everything. But I think it can be easy for a lot of pressure to be put on you to be the best at it” Trevor says. “I think that just doing something because you enjoy it is reason enough to do it! I like drums because it’s an outlet for me to calm down, and listen to good music.”
Trevor likes to encourage others to pursue their hobbies at the pace that they want to. With society moving at a pace that is faster and faster every day, it can be refreshing for some to enjoy the thing they love at a pace that is best for them!
