What the What?

It’s no surprise that the most challenging aspect of the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) 48 Hour Film Competition is time. While the prospect of creating a short film in two days may seem daunting to most, six Digital Media students rose to the challenge.

The Baby Ospreys team, consisting of Tyler Daugherty, Randy Aikens, Keesley Walker, Ryant Johnson, Cameron Colabella, and led by Rebecca Starke, found the challenge to be more than suitable, given their in-class production experience.

“It was equally challenging and fun knowing that our time was limited, we couldn’t be indecisive at all and I feel like that allowed us to bring out our best”

“My favorite part was the fact that we had such limited time to make the film. I really enjoy working under pressure because it really forces you to take your thoughts out of it and just do it.”

These ambitious six eagerly anticipated the time crunch and felt that the challenge was a great opportunity to showcase their collaborative strengths in all aspects of Digital Media, from project conception to filming and execution.

“The most challenging I think was trying to figure out where to begin, but once we did it was very fun and having limited time to put it together made it a lot of fun since we all got to work together to make it happen.”

Sugarloaf, Out.

In the end, our students’ hard work (and loss of sleep) paid off. Sugarloaf was granted an Award of Excellence. They also secured a place within the top nine out of twenty schools overall that submitted to the competition.

According to Heather Birks, an Executive Director at BEA, Sugarloaf’s entry was a “great story with beautiful videography and fabulous pacing.” Film reviewers also noted that the “steady escalation of the plot left viewers feeling enticed.” But don’t take their word for it; watch it yourself!
