Press Release from Elizabeth Humphries
Panama City, FL – The Visual & Performing Arts Division of Gulf Coast State College presents “Museum Views II,” recent paintings by Richard Heipp.
Richard is known for his hyper-realistic paintings. His work hovers between photographic illusion and handcrafted realism – an aesthetic he calls “photocentric.” Paintings that initially appear to be digital prints or mechanically reproduced images ultimately reveal their method and meaning only upon close, contemplative observation. This sleight of hand is central to the artist’s mission. His goal is to shift the viewer’s relationship with the image—from passive consumption to active scrutiny. In this context, seeing overtakes looking. Heipp wants to provoke viewers to slow down, question what they think they see, and reflect on how perception and meaning are constructed through cultural systems. The paintings in this exhibition epitomize this approach by meticulously reinterpreting photographs of artworks and artifacts taken by the artist in various museums. Subjects include contemporary sculpture, religious reliquaries, cultural masks, and even iconic photographs. Heipp explores how their institutional display and context, combined with his photographic capture and ultimate reinterpretation into a painted object, create meaning and shape the understanding and response to the objects, their display and the translation into a final painting.
Richard Heipp has an extensive national exhibition record, including over thirty solo exhibitions in museums and galleries, and well over one hundred group exhibitions. His paintings are included in numerous public and private collections. Heipp has also been commissioned to complete 20 site-specific public art projects. He received a Southern Arts Federation, National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in painting as well as six State of Florida, Individual Artist Fellowships. Heipp taught painting at the University of Florida for 40 years, retiring in 2021 as a Professor Emeritus. He served as the Director of the School of Art + Art History from 2010 to 2015.
