The BEA 48 Film Festival and Tyler’s Role
The BEA 48 Hour Film Festival is an annual competition held by the Broadcast Education Association. The participants are given 48 hours to create a short film but they are given a few specific items they must include within their film. These items include the genre of the film, a character, line of dialogue, and a prop. These items help add to the challenge and the fun of the competition.
For the latest competition that was held in last October the group was given the genre of comedy and with halloween around the corner they opted to do a slasher comedy. It was a satire take on the horror movie genre. At the helm of the production was Tyler and he helped guide his team mates during the competition. Tyler was given the role of director and this was one of the first movie projects like this that he got the opportunity to direct.
What Tyler Learned
Tyler learned many things during the process of creating the short film for the competition. Here are the two main things he said he learned, “I would say the most important things I learned was time management and team management.” When creating any film project there are always so many moving parts and a lot of times you are given a set limit of time to complete the project at hand. One of the things that any filmmaker must perfect is time management, and any director must perfect team management. This process really helped Tyler refine both of these skills and it has helped him become an even better director and filmmaker.
One of the main challenges he and his team had to overcome was the limited time they had to create their film. They only had 48 hours to write, script, film, and edit their short film. To an outsider that seems like enough time but in actuality it is a major mountain they must climb. Tyler rose to the challenge and helped keep everyone focused and excited to keep pushing even when they were all exhausted and ready to be done. He was able to make the tough calls and decisions when they came up.

Tyler’s Current Big Projects
Tyler is working on several major projects at this time. He is currently helping two of his friends who are making a short film. Tyler’s friends recently earned a grant from the SOWAL Foundation to go towards the creation of their short film. Tyler has also been given the opportunity recently to help with a Discovery Channel show that is filmed locally. The show’s production team recently toured the TV studio at Gulf Coast State College to see if they wanted to rent the space to film the interview portions of the show there. If everything goes according to plan they will move forward and have also been given the opportunity to be Production Assistants when they film at the college.
